In a significant move for the Indian tech landscape, homegrown Sarvam AI, a startup specializing in Generative AI, has raised $41 million in Series A funding to advance its mission of developing India-specific AI models, particularly for voice-first interfaces, exemplifying the company’s commitment to full-stack development.

The Series A funding round was by Lightspeed Ventures and complemented by contributions from Peak XV Partners and Khosla Ventures.

Founded in July 2023 by Vivek Raghavan and Pratyush Kumar, previously associated with Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani-backed AI4Bharat, Sarvam AI aims to revolutionize the AI landscape in India by tailoring its solutions to address the unique linguistic and interface challenges prevalent in the region.

“I have seen firsthand the enormous value in innovating at foundational layers and deploying at population scale. India has demonstrated that it can harness technology differently, and with GenAI, we have an opportunity to reimagine how this technology can add value to people’s lives,” said Raghavan.

India-Centric Focus

The company’s strategic vision revolves around leveraging the funding to create AI models that seamlessly support the myriad languages spoken in India and prioritize voice-first interfaces. This approach aligns with Sarvam AI’s commitment to working closely with Indian enterprises, collaborating to co-develop domain-specific AI models utilizing their data.

Sarvam AI sets itself apart by adopting a comprehensive full-stack approach to Generative AI, encompassing research-led innovations in training custom AI models and offering an enterprise-grade platform for authoring and deployment.

This holistic strategy aims to expedite the adoption of Generative AI (GenAI) across India. In this region, enterprises acknowledge the potential of GenAI but face challenges in integrating it into their business operations.

Leadership and Expertise

Co-founder Vivek Raghavan, drawing from a decade-long background in building digital public infrastructure, including Aadhaar, brings a wealth of experience to the venture. The dynamic duo, previously engaged in developing AI models for speech recognition and translation at AI4Bharat, showcases a formidable track record in the AI space.

Sarvam AI’s funding milestone comes amidst a broader trend in India, where Generative AI startups are experiencing robust financial backing.

Notable players like OnFinance.ai, Hexo, and Gan.ai, backed by Peak XV Partners, have secured early funding rounds in the past year. The surge in interest indicates the escalating demand for Generative AI tools, with Indian startups raising over $590 million in funding as of May 2023.

“Vivek’s expertise in building large-scale systems with Pratyush’s domain expertise in AI makes them uniquely positioned to build population-scale AI applications. Large-scale adoption of AI in India will require not only building uniquely Indian use cases but also delivering them at prices everyone can afford, and we believe the Sarvam team is best positioned to accomplish this,” said Harshjit Sethi, Managing Director, Peak XV.

Global Landscape

While Generative AI has been a prominent buzzword in the West, Indian SaaS and tech companies are embracing this transformative technology. Sarvam AI’s recent funding injection positions it at the forefront of this burgeoning movement, poised to impact the global AI stage significantly.

Sarvam AI’s successful Series A funding will propel the company into a pivotal position within India’s AI landscape and help it meet the increasing global relevance of Generative AI solutions. As the demand for GenAI tools continues to soar, Sarvam AI’s commitment to addressing India’s specific linguistic nuances and collaborating with enterprises sets a promising trajectory for the future of AI development in the region.
