The South Korea Ministry of SMEs and Startups, in collaboration with the Korea Startup Forum, is all set to host “COMEUP 2023,” an eagerly awaited global startup festival scheduled from November 8 to 10 at the iconic Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in Seoul. As COMEUP 2023 celebrates its 5th anniversary, it promises to be a monumental event that transcends geographical boundaries and opens exciting avenues for innovative startups and businesses.
A Global Confluence of Innovation
Since its inception in 2019, COMEUP has evolved into a global startup extravaganza that unites South Korea’s vibrant startup ecosystem with a worldwide audience. This year, COMEUP 2023 is going bigger and better, attracting innovative startups, visionary investors, and entrepreneurial leaders from 29 countries. This remarkable increase in participation compared to the previous year is a testament to COMEUP’s growing global significance. The international participation surge is a result of collaborative efforts between the Korean government and various overseas counterparts, creating a platform for cross-border innovation and collaboration. The visitor numbers at COMEUP have been on a steady rise:
- 2019: 21,102
- 2020: 59,054
- 2021: 50,291
- 2022: 57,560
In COMEUP 2023, participation extends to 29 countries, a significant increase from 20 participating countries in 2022. This expansion underscores COMEUP’s commitment to becoming a true global startup festival.
Empowering Innovative Startups on the Global Stage
Minister LEE Young of the Ministry of SMEs and Startups highlights the importance of COMEUP 2023 in the digital era. “The world has entered the ‘digital era of exploration,’ where competition knows no borders. In this new era, the role of startups, with their flexibility, speed, and digital technology, is paramount.” This statement holds particular significance for startups, who are increasingly making their mark on the global stage.
What to Anticipate at COMEUP 2023?
International Collaboration: Exclusive Global Community Zone
A striking feature of COMEUP 2023 is the creation of a “Global Community Zone.” This dedicated zone results from COMEUP’s active outreach to global startup communities and government visits to startup-friendly countries, including India. The Global Community Zone brings together delegates from all over the world, including India, the United States, France, Germany, Switzerland, and more. This zone serves as a hub for investment attraction, with IR pitches and conferences.
Global CVC Conference –Unlocking Investment Opportunities
For the first time in 2023, COMEUP will host a “Global CVC Conference” with participation from over 160 venture capitalists (VCs). This conference, in collaboration with British media company GCV and the Korea Venture Capital Association, aims to facilitate substantial investments and international market entry for startups. It’s an excellent opportunity for startups to attract investments and expand their global footprint.
Nurturing Innovation: COMEUP Stars
COMEUP 2023 continues its innovative “COMEUP Stars” initiative, focused on discovering and nurturing startups with unicorn potential. Indian startups stand to benefit as 13 top Korean and foreign VCs and accelerators closely work with 10 promising startups each, providing mentorship and investment opportunities. Whether you’re a budding Indian entrepreneur or a startup with high potential, this platform offers a chance to grow and flourish.
Open Innovation Day: Celebrating 20 Years of Collaboration
On November 9, designated as “Open Innovation Day,” COMEUP 2023 celebrates successful cases of collaboration between large, medium-sized, and startup companies. Over 20 global firms, including industry giants like NVIDIA, Dassault Systèmes, Hyundai Motor Company, and BMW, will present collaboration models, offering insights into coexistence between startups and established corporations.
Inspiration from Prominent Voices at COMEUP 2023
The global startup festival will host dynamic conference sessions featuring renowned personalities from the world of startups and entrepreneurship. It’s an opportunity for Indian entrepreneurs and businesses to gain valuable insights. The conference’s keynote speaker is Zior Park, a musician, entrepreneur, and an innovative thinker. Additionally, approximately 60 global speakers, including industry leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators, will share their experiences and insights. COMEUP 2023 extends a warm invitation to Indian startups and businesses to be part of this extraordinary global startup festival.
