Indian lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery recycling startup BatX Energies has raised $5 million in a pre-Series A funding round to pioneer sustainable energy solutions by innovatively extracting pure lithium, nickel, and cobalt from lithium-ion batteries to support market expansion and contribute to a circular economy.
The funding round was Led by Zephyr Peacock, with participation from Lets Venture, JITO Angel Network, and key investors like Mankind Pharma, Excel Industries, and BluSmart. The funding aims to propel the company’s ambitious plans for market expansion and scaling up recycling operations across India.
Utkarsh Singh, co-founder and CEO of BatX Energies, said, “We are focusing on reducing the critical material imports for India and producing them by recycling, thus making India Atma Nirbhar. With this capital growth, we will showcase developments in setting up industry standards.”
Global Implications of BatX’s Initiative
The funding injection will be pivotal in BatX Energies’ mission to revolutionize lithium-ion battery recycling. The company, founded in 2020 by Utkarsh Singh and Vikrant Singh, employs an innovative and proprietary zero-waste, zero-emission hydro-electro process.
This process boasts an impressive extraction rate of 99.95 percent pure lithium, nickel, and cobalt from the black mass, setting a new standard in sustainable battery material recovery. With an eye on market expansion and operational scalability, BatX Energies plans to deploy the funds strategically.
The startup’s focus includes scaling up hybrid-electro-based critical material extraction and refining capacities, advancing commercial R&D for precursor cathode active material (pCAM) development from recycled battery minerals, and initiating the production of second-life stationary energy storage applications (ESS & BESS) on a commercial scale.
“The company is poised to become a crucial stakeholder in the battery supply chain in India, as recyclers will be a significant source of critical materials for Li-ion battery manufacturing. We are excited to partner with them on this journey,” said Pankaj Raina, Managing Director, Zephyr Peacock.
Positive Environmental Impact
BatX Energies stands at the forefront of mitigating the environmental challenges posed by traditional battery extraction methods, such as high carbon emissions, land degradation, excessive water usage, and contamination risks.
The company’s vision aligns with global sustainability goals, including the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals, addressing critical issues and making substantial strides toward reducing India’s dependence on critical materials imports.
Beyond its technological advancements, BatX Energies actively uplifts local communities by supporting scrap collectors. The startup facilitates its transition into the organized sector, building a reliable and sustainable supply chain for battery recycling. This holistic approach benefits the environment and positively impacts the socioeconomic landscape.
India, with a projected collective capacity of 600 GWh of lithium-ion batteries across various sectors by 2030, faces the challenge of ensuring responsible waste management.
The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change has responded to this challenge by publishing the Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022, emphasizing environmentally friendly disposal of batteries, including those from electric vehicles, portable automotive, and industrial sectors.
As BatX Energies secures $5 million in funding, the company begins a transformative journey towards sustainable and circular lithium-ion battery recycling.
