Many of the wealthiest entrepreneurs in the world were born poor. They started their ventures at a shoestring budget. In India, too, some of the most famous entrepreneurs, including Dhirubhai Ambani, fought against all the odds and achieved spectacular success. These stories of such visionary founders have proven time and again that hope, perseverance, and courage are more important qualities than the amount of money you have.

Three Rags to Riches Indian Startup Stories That Will Warm Your Heart

1. Bhavesh Bhatia – Sunrise Candles

Bhavesh Bhatia

Bhavesh was born with retina muscular disorder. People suffering from this disorder are not entirely born blind, but they have a very poor vision, which they could lose over time. Bhavesh lost his sight completely when he turned 23.

At that time, Bhavesh was doing the job as a hotel manager and struggling to save money for the cancer treatment of his mother. As fate would have it, Bhavesh’s Mother passed away shortly after. Bhavesh set up a candle business and worked hard to make it successful.

‘Sunrise Candles’ is one of the largest and reputable candle brands today. Besides plain candles, they have forayed into aromatherapy and scented candles. With over 9000 designs and wax consumption to the tune of 25 tonnes a day, Sunrise candles have come a long way. Today, they boast of some of the top businesses as their clients, including Reliance Industries, Big Bazaar, Ranbaxy, Rotary club, and Naroda Industries, among others.

2. Tushar Jain – High Spirit Commercial Ventures

Tushar Jain

From selling bags on the streets of Mumbai to becoming one of the India’s largest manufacturers and sellers of luggage bags and backpacks, Tushar Jain’s story is the stuff entrepreneurial dreams are made of.

After losing almost everything to a stocks scam by Tushar’s Father, they had to rebuild their bag company from the ground up. They ventured into manufacturing high-quality school bags, duffle bags, laptop and business cases, and college bags, to name a few.

High Spirit Commercial Ventures has crossed INR 250 crore revenue mark recently. They have over ten regional offices in various districts across India.

3. Sid Naidu – Sid Productions

Sid Naidu

Sid Naidu started his entrepreneurial journey when he lost his father at 11 years of age. He started by delivering newspapers in the morning to support his family. Naidu had always dreamt of making it big in the fashion industry. But, this dream seemed pretty unrealistic at that point, and it took him nearly ten years to enter into the fashion world.

Over time, Naidu had built a network of some of the most influential people in the fashion world, and it was time to leverage these connections. Soon after, Sid Productions was launched. It provides services such as fashion shoots, art direction, model grooming, TV commercials, and Print ads, to name a few. Now, his company works with some of the biggest brands of the Indian fashion industry, including Myntra, Scullers, Indigo Nation, and Jealous 21, among others.
